During these unprecedented times, it is worth remembering that a stroke will continue to strike every five minutes in the UK. May is 'National Stroke Awareness Month', an observance that highlights the importance of knowing the signs and symptoms of a stroke. - Time is of the essence in terms of suffering a stroke, as this month highlights and we want critical stroke services that best serves the health needs of Medway residents to be secured. Liberal Democrats have called for local stroke services, which are under review, to be retained at Medway Maritime Hospital. - Data from Public Health England suggest people are currently staying away from hospitals, with attendance to Emergency Departments dropping by over a third compared to this period, last year. As the Coronavirus/COVID-19 crisis continues, people in Medway are understandably worried, and this has been a tough, frightening and challenging time for many across our towns. . The priority must be protecting the most vulnerable and a maximum level of support for businesses and public sector workers. People are afraid for their health, but also for their livelihoods. They want to know that - in the face of this extraordinary crisis - their livelihoods and businesses are secure. . Liberal Democrats strongly support the 'International Day of Forests' on 21st March. . Locally we have vigorously campaigned to protect woodland areas which play an important part in our town's rural heritage and recently have opposed developments on orchards located in Lower Rainham and rural land in Capstone Park. . We want to protect these spaces as a vital asset for everyone in Medway and have consistently been calling on the Council to adopt a coherent, credible Local Plan to help protect the environment against developments of this nature. Medway Liberal Democrats support Global Recycling Day - 18th March 2020

Local Liberal Democrats strongly support 'Global Recycling Day' on March 18th. Recycling plays an important part of keeping our environment safe and clean across our towns and we have consistently been unequivocal in our support for raising awareness of local environmental issues. - Nationally, last year Liberal Democrats outlined a series of pledges, including a 70% recycling target and proposal to end waste plastic exports by 2030. These measures would be delivered under a Zero-Waste and Resource Efficiency Act and strengthen incentives to reduce packaging and waste sent to landfill and incineration.

The news that the government is to overhaul immigration rules, introducing a points-based system, has caused concern with Medway-based fruit growers, appealing for seasonal workers amid Brexit uncertainty to help with this year's harvest. . Farming is worth around £5.4 billion to Kent's economy, and supports over 85,000 jobs across the county. There are also now more than 40 brewers in Kent alone, and hops have seen a welcome revival in the 'Garden of England', with the return of organic hops, and other varieties grown locally, which are increasingly popular in craft beer and real ale. .
