'Spare £200k Could be Used to Fund Free Swimming' - say Medway Liberal Democrats
The Medway Liberal Democrats have discovered from a Freedom of Information request that a budget of £500,000 that had been earmarked to fund a revenue shortfall for the new Cozenton Park sports Centre has been reduced to £300,000 and approved at the recent Budget meeting. This poses some big questions for the Labour administration to explain how the now spare £200,000 will be used.
We therefore ask Medway Labour the following questions:
- When did the administration become aware of this additional £200,000, and was this before the budget meeting on the 29th February?
- Will Medway Labour now re-consider using this unallocated £200,000 to assist Medway families through free swimming?
- Have any amenities or programmes been cut or significantly reduced by the withdrawal of £200,000?
Stuart Bourne, Lib Dem candidate for Gillingham & Rainham, says, “When we asked the Labour administration to save free swimming in Medway, we were met by a flat response that Medway Council hasn’t any money to pay for it. If there is this £200k, why can’t it be used to ensure children and the elderly have access to healthy exercise?
When the new Labour administration took over last year, they promised a new era of honest and transparency. We hope they live up to their promise and answer these important questions”.
