'Local Plan highlights that the Council is failing on sustainable transport for Medway' - say the Liberal Democrats

Medway Council is failing, as shown in the draft local plan to deliver sustainable transport solutions for Medway. Medway Liberal Democrats say that the Local Plan in an attempt to provide services and support for extra homes at Frindsbury and Hoo is almost entirely made up from unsustainable transport projects.

John Castle, Chair of Medway Liberal Democrats said, "The absence of any strategic sustainable transport projects in the Local Plan demonstrates just how poor the Conservative Council administration engagement with plans to deliver essential infrastructure to combat the Climate Emergency really is."

John added, "The Climate Emergency demands novel solutions to transport challenges, yet the Council seem bereft of any ideas, they just don't seem to want to understand that our town's future depends on action now. We support developments that promote active travel by walking, cycling and public transport, and are accessible for all. "

Current developments undermine efforts to reduce Medway's air pollution and congestion because the proposals will attract car drivers from miles around the area and put daily motor vehicle movements in front of people's homes.

The Local Plan would be a missed opportunity if it did not reduce congestion and pollution that affect our town's, and an opportunity to reduce peak hour motor traffic, in line with the Council's goals to improve air quality.

Liberal Democrats stress that any developments undertaken within the new Local Plan for Medway should be used to satisfy that commitment to reduce air pollution and congestion.
