February is LGBTQ+ History Month and this year's theme is 'Medicine – Under The Scope' which celebrates LGBTQ+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today.

It's also a month to promote equality and diversity and raise awareness about matters that affect the LGBTQ+ community. Medway Liberal Democrats are proud to celebrate the activism, strength and spirit of entire LGBTQ+ communites across our towns. We have consistently been on the right side of history on LGBTQ+ issues, and have been unequivocal in our support for equality, championing diversity and strengthening efforts to give meaningful attention to LGBTQ+ history.

Alan Wells, spokesperson for Medway Liberal Democrats said, "Significant strides have been made over the past 50 years, and we have progressed from a climate of illegality and fear to much more positive and open times. But we must never forget we still have to defend those achievements as well as facing new challenges in our daily lives. Today we are fighting campaigns not only for equal treatment but appropriate treatment, respecting the diversity within our LGBTQ+ communities.

For all the progress that has been made, there is still undoubtedly more to be done. Increases in hate crimes, worrying levels of transphobia in mainstream media and disparities in social and health care provisions are proof that the battle for equality is far from over. Liberal Democrats will continue to fight until everyone is able to live without fear of hate or discrimination.

Last August, Medway Liberal Democrats stood side by side with other organisations to take part in Medway's third Pride event, where we asked attendees to support our national campaign to end the morally-bankrupt practice of conversion therapy.

We had a tremendous response to our petition, which clearly sends the message that conversion therapy has no place in Medway, nor the United Kingdom."

LGBTQ+ History Month 2024

The 2024 theme celebrates LGBTQ+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today.

We want to showcase the amazing work of LGBTQ+ staff across the NHS and in other healthcare settings, in providing healthcare, especially during the pandemic. Whilst still shining a light on the history of the LGBTQ+ community’s experience of receiving healthcare which has been extremely complicated leaving LGBTQ+ people still facing health inequalities even today.

At a time when the LGBTQ+ community is experiencing a rise in hate crime and hate instances we also encourage you to look ‘Under the Scope’ and listen to LGBT+ peoples’ lived experiences from LGBTQ+ people. When you’re planning your events, please remember to include LGBTQ+ people in all our diversity and add your events to the official LGBTQ+ calendar.
