Bus Stop Out of Reach To People on A229
The Medway Lib Dems are campaigning to get a new pedestrian crossing installed on the A229, to allow better access between the ASDA superstore and the bus stop.
Many residents of Horsted know how difficult it is for pedestrians to cross the busy A229. There are only a few points at which you can cross, and none near the Bridgewood ASDA store. This has forced many to break the fence in the central reservation so that they can quickly cross the road. This is both puts the lives of the pedestrians and the drivers at risk.
That is why in October 2023 Viv Parker submitted a question to Medway Council, asking whether another pedestrian crossing could be placed near the ASDA on the A229. Sadly Medway Council was unable to commit on whether a new pedestrian crossing could be built. There is a local cycling and walking infrastructure plan being developed, and they ‘would ensure the vicinity of the store was considered as part of this work.’ Yet the latest draft of the plan doesn’t include a crossing.
That is why we have launched a petition, calling on Medway Council to listen to the concerns to the local residents, and ensure they have a safe way to cross one of the busiest roads in Medway.
Viv Parker, Lib Dem campaigner for Fort Horsted, says ‘I have spoken to many who find it a real struggle to walk the long distance between ASDA and the bus stop, especially if they are carry heavy shopping bags. Meanwhile, other people are risking their and motorists' lives trying to cross the A229. Medway Council needs to install a pedestrian crossing before we see a fatal accident.’
