Survey's show that Peel L&P are exaggerating support for closing Chatham Docks' - say local Lib Dems
By John Castle for Medway Liberal Democrats
Recently Peel L&P announced the results of a survey of 101 people showing 77 people supported their proposals. Medway Liberal Democratic ran a survey, 212 people responded and 203 voted for keeping the Docks. These two surveys demonstrate that the issue does not have the clear cut support Peel L&P is claiming.
John Castle, Chairman of Medway Liberal Democrats said, "Chatham Docks employs over 800 people, many of those people are in high skilled, high earning, manufacturing roles. With security of tenure the firms would be able to continue to invest and grow. Medway needs good quality jobs like these and those linked to the Docks through the supply chain, closing Chatham Docks will result in jobs being lost. The Docks are also good for the environment, taking traffic off the roads and making commercial use of the river.
Medway council should not be playing into the hands of big corporations by closing the commercial dockyard, it should be investing in Medway's economy and diversifying its revenue income streams. Such investment would be good for both the local economy and the environment."
