Parliamentary Spokespersons

Change the direction of our country, join the fastest growing party in Britain

A welcome from the Chair (Viv Parker)

The Conservative administration in Medway is running out of new ideas. The Conservative government is failing deliver its promises and is paralysed by Brexit.

In Medway we believe that better is possible by delivering the housing that is needed, affordable homes to own and rent including adequate levels of social housing. We believe that job security is threatened by mishandling Brexit negotiations. The High Streets in the Towns are under threat, with a backdrop of homelessness and boarded up stores, the character of the High Streets need attention and a vision that works for local businesses, groups and individuals.

The Liberal Democrats have a vision for the future based around opportunity for everybody and creating opportunities for individuals in business. We demand better at the local level and the national level and we want to see a change of direction.

Our late former Leader Paddy Ashdown argued at the time of the Hong Kong handover that without the added right to live in the UK for those holding British National Overseas (BNO) Passports, Beijing could ignore the Joint Declaration.

We have a duty to act and protect those we vowed we would.

In 2020, this is becoming a tragic reality. 'Beijing's new law will trample over the 'one country, two systems' framework, crushing Hong Kong's autonomy.

By Medway Liberal Democrats - Alan Wells

World Environment Day on Friday 5th June raises awareness on environmental issues and challenges. Local Liberal Democrats have vigorously campaigned to protect Medway's environment and recently have opposed developments on orchards located in Lower Rainham and rural land in Capstone Valley.

We want to protect these spaces as a vital local asset for everyone and have called on the Council to improve environmental standards in our towns. Adopting a coherent, credible Local Plan would help protect the surrounding environment against developments of this nature, by building on 'brown build' sites as opposed to destroying Green Belt sites.

Medway Liberal Democrats are supporting UK Bike Week 6th - 14th June, which gives an opportunity to promote the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling around our towns.

As the UK economy recovers from the effects of the Covid-19 'lock-down' cycling has an even more important role as a healthy and green method of transport. It provides an attractive alternative to car and public transport, enabling social distancing to be fully observed.

Millions of people are worried for their loved ones. They have made heartbreaking sacrifices every day since lockdown, including missing family gatherings like weddings and funerals.

People are rightly angry about Dominic Cummings' behaviour. It cannot be one rule for senior government officials and one rule for everyone else
